book cover & interior design

With a title that impactful, the design needed to match. I designed the words to be big, bold, and in-your-face to grab attention. Stock images were used for the paintings, and in order for them to be the same style, I used several different pieces from a wonderful artist's portfolio.

For inspiration for the interior design, I took a trip to the bookstore and studied many different civil rights and social justice books. What I saw was a lot of bold, solid black graphical elements with quite a bit of white space, which worked well with the direction I took for the cover. I chose to use bold black stripes, which when used with the boxes on each chapter opener, mimic the equal marks on the back cover title. The overall interior design resulted in being simple, clean, striking in its contrast, and easy for the reader to follow.
