book cover & interior design

The author requested imagery of children with obvious physical disabilities for the cover. Instead of photography, I chose to incorporate illustrations from an artist on Shutterstock. They had a wide variety to choose from, so I compiled several images to create a custom cover. I also played with the typeface to make it more playful and added lines to mimic the leaves at the bottom of the cover. (If you look closely enough, there are several surprises hidden through the cover . . . possibly even Bigfoot.)

Illustrations were used throughout the book to carry the look and feel of the cover. Each chapter has a custom-designed opening spread, which I created from piecing together different elements of the cover artist's illustrations. Photos were then picked to match the color combinations of the illustrations.
